Cultural and natural sites on the UNESCO List of World Heritage
There are numerous cultural and natural monuments in Croatia. The most famous are: Diocletian’s Palace (Dioklecijanova palača) in Split, the Old Town of Trogir, Euphrasius’ Basilica in Poreč, Šibenik Cathedral, the City of Dubrovnik, the Stari Grad plain on Hvar – all listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.The Plitvice Lakes, the most beautiful and most famous national park in Croatia, is our only site of natural heritage included in the prestigious UNESCO list.
On the UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage List are the Festivity of Saint Blaise, lace-making in Lepoglava, Hvar and Pag, the annual Carnival bell ringers’ pageant from the Kastav Region, Procession “Za Križen”, (‘following the Cross’) on the Island of Hvar, two-part singing and playing (music) in the Istrian scale, in Istria and Hrvatsko Primorje, the annual spring procession of ‘Kraljice/Ljelje’ (queens) from Gorjani and traditional manufacture of wooden toys in the Hrvatsko zagorje region. Croatia is among the countries with the most protected intangible cultural heritage elements, recorded on the UNESCO list.
